WFQ 2012 Quilt Challenge - Books!
The criteria for our 2012 quilting challenge have been released, and this year we're focusing on books! Reading and quilting go together - so many quilters are avid readers and many even listen to audio books while quilting!
Choose a favorite or one that inspires you and refer to the set of criteria below. We have an opportunity to hang these quilts in participating businesses during the Sedro-Woolley Story Walk on March 10, 2012 and to also hang them as part of the Challenge category at our 2012 quilt show, June 1-2-3.
Complete your entry by February 29th (it's always fun to use that as an important date) and turn it in at Cascade Fabrics with a copy of the entry form - also available at Cascade Fabrics.
There is no limit on the number of times you can enter and EVERYONE is invited to participate! Share this info with other local quilters of all ages and be inspired by books!
The fine print: Using a book for your inspiration, make a quilt depicting some aspect of the book. You can use the cover, general story line, specific setting/scene in the book, title of the book or a character of the book to symbolize the book. There are no size restrictions on the quilt.
The quilt must have a hanging sleeve and if possible provide the rod also (doweling, cut to size, with 2 eye screws in each end works great), but please note, that depending on the store your quilt is placed in, we may use tacks or push pins to hang the quilt.
A copy of the cover of the book must be incorporated into the label on the back of the quilt.
This form must accompany the quilt. Please turn the completed quilt into Cascade Fabrics by February 29, 2012.

Cascade Fabrics in Sedro-Woolley - remembering Paul Kelley
There was a wonderful memorial service today for our friend, Paul Kelley, at Riverfront Park in Sedro-Woolley. He and his wife, Bobi, have been the owners of Cascade Fabrics for many years. Cascade Fabrics is our "LQS" and we appreciate Paul and Bobi's support of the intensive quilting community here. Paul passed away on July 26th and we'll miss him so much. He was an old-style, customer-service-oriented type of small town business owner and the entire community knew and respected him.
Here are two photos of a quilt that local quilters made for Paul when he celebrated 20 years as Cascade Fabrics. Bobi requested that it be displayed at his service.

2011 Quilt Show day 3 - the end!
What a great quilt show!
Finally, at 4:00 on Sunday afternoon, we broke down the show and returned all the quilts. Monday morning, when it was time to take the quilt stands back to Fidalgo Island Quilters (they were rentals!), 10 volunteers showed up at 8:30 in the morning to do the loading and transport, and to do some final cleaning on the buildings! What would we do without them?
Check back on this blog for some photos of fabulous quilts! And think about what quilts you will enter next year. Come on in! Woolley Fiber Quilters 2012 quilt show will be June 1-2-3 in Downtown Sedro-Woolley!
PS Don't freak out about "where" the quilt show will be. It will be downtown. All you need to do is come to Metcalf Street and look for the signs that say "Quilt Show". We'll find a building (or two) and be ready to greet YOU!
Thanks to the quilters who shared their work, the attendees who appreciated the quilts, the vendors who kept us hopping with ideas, and the VOLUNTEERS who made the show run like a fine clock.
It takes SO MANY people to put on a great show like this and we appreciate them all. Lots of non-quilters volunteer, just because they have a quilter in their lives or because they just like the fun of a quilt show!
Sedro-Woolley's Blast from the Past vintage car show was Sunday, June 5th, and it attracted folks from all over the region. More than 160 cars were on display - these photos were taken at about 8:00 in the morning when entries were still coming in. Later, the streets were jam-packed!!

2011 Quilt Show - Day Two!!
We had spectacular weather today - so welcome after the 9-month winter we have endured here in the Pacific Northwest. So glad that Sedro-Woolley's Blast from the Past festival is enjoying perfect weather for the event!
At the quilt show, we had enthusiastic attendees, dedicated volunteers, and tempting vendors!
Today was the closing of the People's Choice voting. Ribbons have been awarded - including the Judge's Choices from our three local celebrity judges - and the list of winners will be published tomorrow.
In the meantime, here are photos of a few of the custom-decorated clothespins we use to hold the artists' statements to the quilts. They're a little souvenir for each exhibitor, and each one is different! We can't thank you enough for sharing your beautiful quilts with us; these clothespins are just a little reminder for you of how much you're appreciated.

Woolley Fiber Quilters 2011 Quilt show opens! Blast of Color!
Blast of Color has opened and it's a hit! What a great day for a quilt show - beautiful weather and lots of folks eager to get out and explore Sedro-Woolley's Blast from the Past festival.
Here are just a few photos to whet your appetite for the visual treat we have for you.
Make sure you come to Downtown Sedro-Woolley this weekend for vintage cars, a bicycle fun ride, street vendors, kids' contests, and so much more!!

Where is the Woolley Fiber Quilters Quilt Show?? June 3-4-5
Our downtown core is Metcalf Street - about three blocks long. Part of the street will be blocked off to traffic and filled with food vendors and other enticements - all for the annual Blast From the Past celebration.
If you want to put an address into your GPS, the quilt show will be at 807 and 817 Metcalf Street. Two locations! We need a lot of room to put up all of the quilts!
If you are familiar with Sedro-Woolley's downtown core, these two addresses are the former Courier Times building and the former Oliver Hammer building (OH moved one address south - yes, you can still shop there and they are bigger than ever!). The Courier Times, Sedro-Woolley's weekly newspaper, is now published at the location of its parent company in Mount Vernon.
So just come to downtown Sedro-Woolley and look for the signs that say "quilt show". There is plenty of parking in the municipal parking lots just off Metcalf. Blast from the Past is a festival for strolling, and you'll enjoy the downtown ambiance! Look for the vintage car show on Sunday, just off Metcalf, in front of the Sedro-Woolley Museum (intersection of Woodworth and Murdock). Lots of restaurants, lots of family fun! Come early! Stay late! Enjoy!

Quilt Show Registrations - there's still time!
We are still accepting quilt entries for the show! Please complete a form - available at Cascade Fabrics in downtown Sedro-Woolley - and drop off the form, there, too! You'll need the dimensions of your quilt and a photo of your quilt. Turn-in day is Tuesday, May 31st and you'll need to add a sleeve to your quilt before you bring it to Cascade Fabrics that day.
Our objective is to include quilts from as many local quilters as possible - don't be shy! Quilters are inspired by seeing others' hard work and we would love to see yours!

Blast of Color - time to register your quilts!
As the Blast of Color quilt show approaches, so do deadlines!
Quilt registration forms are due May 16, 2011 at Cascade Fabrics in Sedro-Woolley. Or give them to Teri Bever or Peggy Toyne, who are the Registration Divas.
Quilt turn-in day is May 31 at Cascade Fabrics.
Need to mail a form? Mail it to Peggy Toyne at the address listed on the form.
Need a form? There are lots at Cascade Fabrics and an electronic copy (MS Word format) has been sent to every WFQ member - plus a few more people! Ask any member to e'mail it to you!
A photo of your quilt MUST accompany the registration form! This is pretty standard in quilt shows. An easy way to do it is to print a digital photo on the BACK of your completed form. Then they'll never be separated! If you have a separate photo, be sure to put identifying info on the back of it so we can match it to the form if they become separated.
Quilt not quite done? You can take a photo of the "top" and submit it with the form on May 16th. Then finish the quilt by turn-in day!
Each quilt MUST have a hanging sleeve on the back (at the top...) that is at least 4 inches high and runs the length of the quilt. See form for details. This is also a standard feature in quilt shows.

We'll use the entry forms to begin the process of laying out the show, so it's critical that you turn in your forms by the deadline. If you have questions, ask Peggy (her number is on the form).
All quilters are welcome to enter! Please show your quilts with pride! Don't worry about your skill level or competing with others. This show is for FUN, which is why we also have the People's Choice voting. That makes it fun for quilt-appreciators, too!
Thanks for participating! Last year the quilt show was the talk of the town and we want to show everyone what we have been doing all during this LONG winter!!

Quilt Show Challenge
We can hardly wait until June 3-4-5, when the Woolley Fiber Quilters will have their 2nd annual show! So to get ready, we are having a quilt challenge - these entries will be exhibited at the show and will be subject to voting by the public. Here are the rules:
Finished piece must be 100 inches or less in diameter.
Quilt must contain at least one item purchased from a dollar-type store - visible on the front.
Quilt must have a label on the back that includes the receipt for the item you purchased.
That's it! Start those creative engines humming! And finish those other entries for the show - entry details coming in a future post. But soon!

Margaret Miller Easy Pieces Workshop - it was great!
We had such a great lecture and workshop this weekend with the legendary Margaret Miller. She showed us how to play with color and to quickly construct quilt blocks that show off our fabric collections!
Woolley Fiber Quilters will have more opportunities to learn from accomplished quilt teachers like Margaret. Join us!
